Wiebes wins in sprint duel van Vos and takes a win in Sanremo Women

Lorena Wiebes has won the eighth edition of Milan-Sanremo among the women, and the first since 2005. After 156 kilometers, the Dutch of SD Worx was the strongest in a sprint of a small group on the Via Roma.

Marianne Vos was the first to start the sprint, but was beaten and finished second.

For the first time in twenty years there was another women’s edition of Milan-Sanremo. The peloton awaited a 156 -kilometer route from Genoa to Sanremo. Because the start of the women’s competition is not in Milan, the course is called SanRemo Women.

With the wind in the back and a compact platoon, the first seventy kilometers were finished rapidly. The first rider to put a serious attack was Anne Knijnenburg. The former athlete rode a lead of almost three minutes on the peloton on her own, but she was caught again on the first climb.

On the Cipressa (5.6 kilometers at 4.1 percent on average ascent rate), the peloton was reduced to around forty riders. In the descent, a group of favorites led by Pauline Ferrand-Prévot hit a small hole, but they stopped again.

And so the difference had to be made in the last ten kilometers containing the climb of the Poggio (3.7 kilometers at 3.7 percent on average). The Française Juliette Labous, teammate of Demi Volling, was the first to take on a kilometer from the top. Fulling was the first to go into the descent, but had all the favorites in her wake.

The Italian champion Elisa Longo Borghini tried with a late drop, but world champion Lotte Kopecky took the lead and rode the gap again just in time. Marianne Vos was the first in the sprint, but Wiebes just got over it. The Swiss Noemi Rüegg finished third.
