Prosecutors in Istanbul have requested a court to lock up the arrested mayor Imamoglu longer, pending his trial. The court will make a decision about this later today.
The Turkish Public Prosecution Service accuses the mayor of Istanbul of terrorism and corruption. Imamoglu denies and he and his supporters think that the charges are politically motivated. The mayor, popular in Istanbul, is seen as the most important opponent of President Erdogan in the presidential election in 2028.
Protest
Imamoglu and dozens of others from the Opposition party CHP were arrested on Wednesday. The same day and the following days, tens of thousands of CHP supporters took to the streets in Turkey. Those protests ran out in some places on confrontations with the police.

Again protests in Istanbul against arrest mayor Imamoglu
The leader of Imamoglu’s party, Özgür Özel, called the arrest last week “a coup attempt against the next president”. The CHP will most likely announce today that Imamoglu will be the candidate for the national elections of 2028.
Imamoglu has been mayor of Istanbul since 2019. Last March he defeated the AK party of Erdogan in local elections in Istanbul. Imamoglu’s CHP also won in the capital Ankara.
