Trump threatens with a 200 percent levy on wine and champagne

US President Donald Trump comes with a new trade threat. He now wants to introduce import duties of 200 percent on wines and champagne from the European Union. He reports this on his social media channel Truth Social.

President Trump emphasizes that it concerns wines, champagne and alcoholic products that come from France and other European countries. “This will be fantastic for the wine and champagne sector in the United States.”

The announced measure is a response to EU import duties to American products, such as whiskey, jeans and engines. This measure was again introduced yesterday morning by the chairman of the European Commission von der Leyen as a counter -measure at American import rates on steel and aluminum. As a result, American companies must now pay 25 percent extra tax on those products that they get from abroad.

Since Donald Trump has taken a seat in the White House, he threatens with all kinds of different taxes that meet his most important trading partners. Similar threats were also withdrawn later (sometimes on the same day). So the question is whether an import rate of 200 percent will actually be implemented.
