‘Tolerate together what is incomprehensible’

The attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg was commemorated on Saturday evening in the city’s cathedral. The service included relatives of victims and rescue workers.

On Friday evening, a man drove a car into the Christmas market in Magdeburg. Five people were killed. Two hundred people were also injured, including forty seriously injured.

Mayor Simone Borris said during the memorial service that she was deeply shocked and thanked the rescuers. Bishop Gerhard Feige appealed to those present not to close themselves off due to hatred. “We are here together to support each other and endure what is incomprehensible. Together we are here to not let hatred and violence have the last word.”

Outside, the square was full of people watching the memorial service on a large screen. In memory of the deceased, dozens of lighted candles and flowers were placed at the side portal of the cathedral, as in the rest of the city.
