Eight years and a day after the attack on the Christmas market in Berlin, there was another attack on a Christmas market last night, this time in Magdeburg. At least two people were killed. There are fears of more victims, because some of the more than 60 injured people are in poor condition.

This is what we now know about the attack, the victims and the perpetrator.

The attack

A car drove into a crowd at the Christmas market in Magdeburg just after 7 p.m. The authorities assume one scale.
According to eyewitnesses, the perpetrator drove through barriers and he zigzagged through the Christmas market.
The vehicle drove straight into the public in the direction of the city hall.
The Bild newspaper, among others, reports on the basis of police sources that the perpetrator drove about 400 meters across the site.
No explosive was found in the suspected perpetrator’s vehicle. That was feared.

The victims

Authorities have confirmed that there two people died, including a small child.
According to the police and the municipality, there are more than sixty injured. Fifteen of them are seriously injured.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently has no reports that there are Dutch people among the victims.

The perpetrator

The 50-year-old perpetrator comes out Saudi Arabia and has lived in Germany since 2006. He is a doctor who lives and works in Bernburg, about 50 kilometers south of Magdeburg. The man had a permanent residence permit.
The perpetrator’s motive is still unclear. Authorities say he acted alone.
According to several German media, the perpetrator is a ex-muslim who criticized Islam.
He is said to be a supporter of the radical right party AfD and in previous interviews he said he is opposed to Islam.
He is also said to be very active on X and a fan of Elon Musk, the owner of the platform.

The reactions

Chancellor Scholz: “My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand by your side and the residents of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescuers in these anxious hours.”
The German Federal Minister Faeser the Ministry of the Interior says it is “worried about the lives of the seriously injured”.
Scholz and Faeser are visiting Magdeburg today.
Prime Minister Schoof has expressed its condolences to the Chancellor on behalf of the Netherlands. “Terrible images from Magdeburg, Germany, where a car crashed into a Christmas market,” he writes on X. “The Netherlands stands shoulder to shoulder with our German neighbors in these dark moments.”
The National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security, Pieter Aalbersberg, has reiterated that the risk of an attack in the Netherlands is real.
Secretary General of NATO Mark Rutte has contacted Chancellor Scholz.
France shares according to president Macron “the pain of the German people and expresses its full solidarity”.
Players from Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig remained on the pitch after their Bundesliga match last night to observe a minute’s silence with the crowd.
