With twelve goals, Sem Steijn of FC Twente enters the winter break as the striking leader of the top scorers list in the Premier League. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has been on a roll throughout the calendar year and is satisfied with the steps he is taking.
“My development is simply very good,” says Steijn. A header from a difficult angle, a bang under the crossbar and a free kick from about 25 meters. The Hague midfielder often arrives at the right spot in front of the goal with good timing and also scores from a distance.

Steijn is top scorer of the first half of the season: ‘Working on kicking and viewing behavior every day’
These are things that he trains extra for and tinkers with people who look at them differently than many football coaches do.
Steijn: “I try to live like a top athlete.” What does that mean in his case? “Working really hard and focusing on my stairs and viewing habits every day.”
Working with scanning expert
This viewing behavior, also known as ‘scanning’, appears to be a serious factor in its rise. “The act of looking away from the ball by a football player prior to the moment a player receives the ball,” is how Norwegian sports scientist Geir Jordet puts it.
When ‘scanning expert’ Patrick Woerst gave an explanation in the Jeugdjournaal in 2022, Steijn immediately wanted to work with him.
“I was always busy with it, because I used to think it was cool to watch players like Xavi and Iniesta,” says Steijn. “‘What are they doing now?’ He (Woerst) is so good at that that I wanted to work with him.”
He contacted Woerst himself, who works with Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch and Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries, among others.
After studying match footage and having conversations with Steijn, Woerst started working intensively with him. Analyzes of his viewing behavior, movements and positioning on the field. Discuss areas for improvement and work on them in practice.
Intrinsic motivation
“Sem knew that there was a lot of room for improvement and we saw that too. His intrinsic motivation makes it very interesting to work with him,” says Woerst, who has since scrutinized every match of the Twente midfielder, looking for areas for improvement.
“He is often more critical of himself than I am of him.”

Unlike many football followers, for Woerst it is not the high goal production that stands out for Steijn. “I am happy for him when he scores, but how he plays under full pressure against PSV is more interesting to me. It makes me proud to see how his game has improved lower down the field. The gambling is out.”
“Previously, Sem said when the ball was taken from him that he could not do anything about it, because he had not seen his opponent coming. Now he creates the right conditions through scanning. He no longer gambles, but knows where the spaces are to to stand freely, and know where opponents and teammates stand.”
Steijn also notices the progress, regardless of his goals. “I have gained a lot more peace in the field and I play many more balls forward, at the right moments. But it is mainly the peace that it has given me. By working on it a lot, you get to know it more and more. knee.”
Finishing with Van Nistelrooij
In addition to Woerst, Steijn also enlisted the help of a recognized goal machine. He visited former top striker Ruud van Nistelooij.
On a football field in Brabant, Steijn learned from Van Nistelrooij how to best position himself before he shoots, so that it is more difficult for a goalkeeper to predict which angle he is going to shoot into.
Analyst Ibrahim Afellay pointed to the easy-scoring Steijn in Studio Voetbal as the best player of the first half of the season.
“I think it’s great that that boy has such an impact in a not-so-good team. Twelve goals and four assists, I think that’s admirable,” said the former midfielder of the Dutch national team. Free kick specialist Pierre van Hooijdonk previously said that Steijn has “the best kicking technique in the Premier League”.
Steijn ends the calendar year with 19 Premier League goals. For his club FC Twente, only born attackers Dick van Dijk (28 goals in 1968), Blaise N’Kufo (24 in 2006) and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (21 in 1999) scored more often in a calendar year.
“I am developing both playing football and in the box. The fact that I have a higher number than last year, in terms of goals and assists, is very nice. Then we are on the right track,” he says with satisfaction.
