Pakistan and India bombard each other with rockets and drones, five dead

In a rocket attack from the Pakistani army on the Indian region of Jammu, five people died this morning. The police announced this. The rocket attack was a reaction to an earlier attack by the Indian army on Pakistan.

Three air force bases were the target. One of those bases is on the edge of the capital Islamabad, near the army headquarters. Eyewitnesses tell Reuters news agency that heavy explosions could be heard.

A spokesperson for the Pakistani army says that most rockets have been intercepted and that they have not touched their goals. According to Pakistani state broadcaster, rockets have been fired at India.

The Indian authorities report that various military locations and a rocket storage would be the target of the Pakistan attacks. Various drones would also have been signaled above the city of Amritsar in the Indian state Punjab. A spokesperson for the army says on X that they have been destroyed.

Pakistani airspace is now closed until Saturday afternoon local time. Thirty airports in the north and west of India are also closed for civilian flights until 15 May.

The G7 (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, United States) call Pakistan and India to reluctance and encourage both countries to talk to each other.

India and Pakistan have been bombarding each other since on April 22 at a terrorist attack in Kashmir at least 26 Indian tourists were killed. India accuses Pakistan of being behind that attack. Pakistan contradicts that. Since then, tensions between the two countries have been high. Last Wednesday the conflict escalated. At least 48 people were killed.
