Former Belgian cyclist Rik Van Looy has died at the age of ninety. The ‘Emperor of Herentals’ became world champion twice and recorded a total of 397 victories.
Van Looy’s health deteriorated in recent weeks. He died in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. He would have turned 91 years old on Friday.
Van Looy was the first to win all five cycling monuments. Only two others managed to match him: Eddy Merckx and Roger De Vlaeminck.
The Grobbendonk-born cyclist won his first world title in 1960. In Karl-Marx-Stadt he defeated the outgoing champion André Darrigade. A year later he was again the strongest in Bern.
Classic King
Van Looy also scored well in the classics. He managed to win every top classic at least once. In 1958 he won his first major classic with Milan-San Remo. This was followed by the Paris-Roubaix three times (1961, 1962 and 1965) and the Tour of Flanders twice (1959 and 1962).
The Flemish also rode to a top ten ranking in the three Grand Tours and took 39 stage victories (18 in Vuelta, 12 in Giro and 9 in Tour).
