Banks provide advice on cash in crisis situations

The banks are responding to Defense Minister Brekelmans, who appeared in the TV program on Sunday WNL on Sunday said that Dutch society must prepare for all possible war scenarios. He pointed to the risk of failure of, for example, internet, electricity and water. “But also that payment transactions will not continue for a while. Therefore, always have some cash at home,” the minister advised.

The NVB says that banks are already thinking about concrete advice. “How much cash you should have at home. In what denominations. And whether it could be useful to have an extra bank account or an extra credit card,” said a spokesperson.

Because the consultation has yet to start, the NVB cannot yet be specific: “We plan to provide ready-made advice after the New Year.”

By the way, the government has been advising for some time to have a package at home for an emergencysuch as power outages. In addition to cash, a flashlight, batteries, candles or a radio with battery are useful to have at such a time.

Having too much cash at home is not considered wise, because burglary would then become attractive. Home contents insurance covers cash in the house up to 250 to a maximum of 500 euros.
